Many dogs can do the work of a diabetic alert dog. However, if you are looking for a dog to train as a DAD, there are a number of ways that you can set yourself up for success.
Focus on dogs that have pretty high Prey Drive. It seems that the majority of dogs that are successful as diabetic alert dogs have a good deal of prey drive. Prey drive is the dog’s drive to hunt.
Focus on breeding programs that are producing dogs that work. There are breeding programs that produce a large number of working dogs, such as gun dogs, detection dogs, search and rescue dogs etc. I like to work with breeders who understand what it takes to be successful in these various jobs.
Start with a puppy. Starting with a puppy gives you the opportunity to participate in every aspect of the dog’s development. Training can begin early, before the dog develops any behavior issues. Any issues that do arise can be addressed immediately.
